Throughout the Bible, women of faith have played central roles in God’s story. Their courage, strength, and obedience are examples for us all. Like the Proverbs 31 woman, they serve as examples of women whose value is “far above rubies.” Let’s look at some of these remarkable women and the qualities that set them apart and continue to inspire us today.
Sarah: A Woman of Faith
Sarah’s story is a powerful reminder that God’s promises never fail, even when circumstances seem impossible. Well past childbearing age, Sarah laughed at the idea that she could become a mother, yet her laughter turned to joy as God kept His word. Hebrews 11:11 says, “And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise.” Sarah faced challenges, but her trust in God led to the birth of Isaac, the promised child.
Rahab: The Courageous Protector
Rahab’s faith stands out in the story of Israel’s conquest of Jericho. In Joshua chapter two, we read how, despite her reputation as a harlot, Rahab recognized the power of the God of Israel and risked her life to protect the Israelite spies. Her faith and courageous actions also led to the rescue of her family and earned her a place in the Hall of Faith: “By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient” (Hebrews 11:31). Rahab’s story shows that faith can change lives and God values those who trust Him, regardless of their past.
Mary, the Mother of Jesus: Blessed Among Women
In Luke 1:2, an angel greets Mary with the words, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you: blessed are you among women!” This high praise did not come without its difficulties. Being the mother of the Savior began with the stigma of an unwed pregnancy and led to heartbreak at the foot of the Cross. As the earthly mother of Jesus, Mary loved and cared for Him, but she also understood that He had work to do for His heavenly Father (Luke 2:49). She bowed to His authority in spiritual matters and became one of His faithful followers.
Mary Magdalene: Devoted Follower
Mary Magdalene was present at many important moments in Jesus’ ministry. As a devoted follower of Christ, she witnessed both sorrow and triumph. John 19:25 tells us that she was one of the women who stood at the Cross of Jesus, demonstrating her deep devotion and love for Him. She was also among the first to celebrate Christ’s resurrection. Her unwavering faith and loyalty inspire us to stay committed to Christ no matter what we face.
The stories of Sarah, Rahab, Mary the mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene show us some of the many ways women of faith have shaped God’s story. Their lives teach us to trust God’s promises, to have courage in hard times, to live with integrity and compassion, and to stay devoted to Christ. May these great women inspire us to live boldly and faithfully in our own journeys, remembering “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised” Proverbs 31:30.
