If happiness is more about the journey than the destination, then look not further than Darla Self and Linda Best at Express Your Self. Their boutique, located in Bryant, offers a wide range of ladies apparel, gifts and interior designs.
“It’s different but it works. It definitely works,” said Self. An interior designer by trade, Self opened Express Your Self 11 years ago in a partnership with her mother, Linda. The business was the first of its kind in Saline County, focusing on clients’ homes. That, however, proved to be just the beginning.
“I would come over and do homes for holidays like Christmas,” she said. “As time grew and more clothes options became available, they’d try on things I brought while I was preparing their homes. Now, I guess you could say we decorate your home and we decorate you.”
And why not? Self contends the art of interiors isn’t a stretch from fashion at all. “If you’re putting together color patterns, textures and paint for a home, it’s the same thing you’d do for yourself in clothing, accessories and jewelry.”
Self also says those she serves aren’t just her customers. They’re her friends.
“They’ve been coming in for the past 11 years, so not only do I know their homes, I also know the closets,” she said. “I’ll call if something comes in I think is right for them, and if they’re busy with work or kids, we’ll take it right out to them in their car.”
And in case you’re wondering if there’s anything Express Your Self doesn’t have? Darla Self has an answer for that, too. “We don’t have anything for men. We don’t have room.”
