Exceptional PT

Having community is an essential part of physical and mental well-being, and one of the core principles that makes Exceptional Physical Therapy, well, exceptional.

Owners Marla Murphy, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and Carrie Johnson, who holds a masters in physical therapy, discovered their visions for patient care aligned and decided to make those visions a reality. “We met working at another facility. In discussing the limitations of the business, we decided to embark on our own journey to provide exceptional quality physical therapy services with treatment plans customized to the individual needs of each person. We knew we could do it better,” says Carrie.

In a calm, relaxing environment, patients develop friendships with the therapist and often stop by with treats, or just to say hello. “Being the owner of the practice is freeing because there is no productivity stress, and we are able to spend as much time as needed with each patient to reach their goals,” adds Marla. The same therapist stays with each patient throughout the entire treatment plan to make sure the exercises are being done correctly, ensuring maximum benefit.

Another component that elevates Exceptional Physical Therapy above the rest is their wholistic approach to improving each patient’s quality of life. “Oftentimes, providers are too compartmentalized, focused only on the initial area of concern. It’s all connected, so we keep that concept at the forefront of our treatment plan and address it all. For example, if someone comes in with a hip issue, and we discover a problem with the back, we immediately address that as well.”

In addition to the physical aspects of recovery, Exceptional Physical Therapy addresses the mental aspect of healing. “There is often counseling involved in what we do, because trauma manifests throughout your entire body,” says Carrie. Patients are referred to counselors as needed, and the book The Body Keeps Score is a recommended resource for those dealing with PTSD-related pain.

Exceptional Physical Therapy is the only outpatient facility in the area offering a safe harness system for balance and gait re-education that reduces the risk of falls during treatment. This is especially helpful for those dealing with gait and balance issues who are at an increased risk for falls, such as amputees. As individuals progress, they can traverse different floors, including a cushioned surface, rocker boards, and eventually an obstacle course.

The 3,000 square foot practice is always thinking about how to expand space and services to meet the needs of a wide array of conditions. Newer services include dry needling, red light therapy, integrative health, wellness and nutritional counseling, post-partum rehab/strengthening programs, and pelvic floor dysfunction in women. “We have recently added a home exercise program utilizing a mobile app to increase compliance as well as communication once the patient has been discharged.”

Marla has a true passion for helping those affected by Multiple Sclerosis because she was diagnosed with this disease in her early 20’s. Having served on the National MS Society Leadership Council and as a two-time co-chair for Walk MS, Marla donates her time helping to raise money for MS research.

Also certified in breast cancer rehab, Marla is committed to helping those dealing with the effects of post radiation and chemotherapy, rebuilding range of motion and mobility, and even employing skin smoothing techniques to reduce surgery scars. According to Marla, “It’s not just about bones and nerves, but whatever it takes to gain back self-love and confidence. When I see that, I know I chose the right profession.”

Carrie’s love is outpatient orthopedics, with incorporation of therapeutic Pilates for core stabilization. Carrie is also a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach offering personal one-on-one sessions. “Health coaching starts with a questionnaire and an in-person session to help me understand the client’s goals, and any obstacles in reaching those goals. After the meeting, I customize a plan to help them reach their full potential,” says Carrie.

The program is based on RESCUE, an acronym for Relationship, Exercise, Spirituality, Career/Community, Understanding, and healthy Eating. Commitment to client success goes well beyond the clinic walls. “A client was struggling with preparation of healthy meals, so I went with her to the grocery store to shop and teach her how to create easy, healthy meals,” recalls Carrie.

A new ruling going into effect this summer now allows Medicaid recipients to be seen in an outpatient- based facility. “We are excited to help people who previously lacked access to these services. We are currently reaching out to our associates as to how we begin accepting this insurance”.”

At its core, Exceptional Physical Therapy is in the “Quality of Life” business, committed to helping people who struggle with pain, mobility, self-confidence and even trauma issues, discover their best life possible.
