Countertop World

utumn is the perfect excuse to add a little bit of fixer upper style to your house, and what better way than to replace those old kitchen countertops? Undergoing a kitchen remodel can be a big undertaking with many important factors to consider, including timeline, budget, functionality, and design.

But with the right amount of prep and planning, remodeling your kitchen can not only increase the value of your home but also can be a rewarding experience. Nobody knows this better than David McDougall, owner of Countertop World in Bryant, the largest stone fabricator in Central Arkansas.

David has been a business owner in Saline County for 14 years, and his favorite aspect is the family-friendly environment he says the city and county consistently nurture. “The community’s dedication is evident through numerous monthly and annual events, as well as the well-maintained parks and libraries,” David said. “It’s clear there is a genuine care for families and children, which in turn attracts more families to move here who feel valued and supported. These families become our wonderful customers, with whom we have the pleasure of working every single day.”

Before returning to Arkansas, David worked in Denver, Colorado, focusing on corporate sales, where he gained invaluable insights into business operations, sales strategies, and customer relations. Leveraging this knowledge, he successfully launched Countertop World in 2017. “One of the key lessons I learned is the importance of listening to those around you who possess experience and expertise.

“Their insights can provide significant guidance and contribute to your professional growth,” David said. He also states that one key factor that inspires and drives him towards success is a passion for exceptional craftsmanship and customer satisfaction.

“Seeing raw materials transform into beautiful, functional pieces that enhance a customer’s home brings me immense satisfaction,” he said. “Dedication to quality craftsmanship and the joy of exceeding customer expectations fuels my drive to innovate, improve, and grow our business.”

David said when he approaches each project with a commitment to excellence and a focus on making customers’ visions a reality, doing so becomes a powerful motivator propelling Countertop World forward. He also has some tips for homeowners when it comes to caring for those visions once they become a reality.

“Regular cleaning with mild soap and water will keep your countertops looking fresh,” he advised. “But avoid using harsh chemicals that can damage the surface. And for natural stone, make sure to use a pH-neutral cleaner.” David also advises using a granite polish periodically to enhance the natural shine and add an extra layer of protection, and stresses the importance of always using products specifically designed for granite.

“Make sure you use trivets or hot pads under hot pots and pans,” he cautions. “While granite can handle high temperatures, sudden extreme heat can cause thermal shock and lead to cracks.” A few other tips he suggests are getting your granite countertops sealed when needed to maintain their elegance and durability, ensuring they remain a stunning feature in your home.

While David has worked on many amazing homes all over Saline County, one of the newest projects he has taken on is cutting out granite slabs in the shape of the state of Arkansas, which will then be made into the tops of custom side tables. “They really are unique,” David said.

“I love Arkansas, but I also love to travel all over with my family, and I love to be outdoors in nature. It helps to provide a refreshing balance to the decision-making and bustle associated with owning a business. These hobbies create lasting memories for my family and me.” And family, David says, is what really matters. After losing both his brothers, he realized at an early age that life is too short to spend it doing something that doesn’t bring you joy. And he has some advice for anyone looking to start their own business.

“Build a network of mentors, advisors, peers, and industry contacts,” David says. “Relationships can open doors to new opportunities and provide valuable support. The business landscape is constantly changing. Stay flexible and be prepared to pivot when necessary. Embrace feedback and learn from your mistakes to continuously improve and innovate and deliver exceptional customer service.

“Above all, listen to your customers, address their needs, and go the extra mile to exceed their expectations!” David is the first to admit that entrepreneurship will have its ups and downs, but he says to stay patient, persistent, and resilient in the face of challenges. “Keep your long-term vision in mind and remain passionate about your mission.

“Starting a business is a marathon, not a sprint, and with careful planning, continuous learning, and unwavering determination, you can turn your entrepreneurial dreams into a successful reality.”
